Clean energy for safe water and sustainability of rural water schemes

Project overview

This initiative, in partnership with RUWASA DM Simanjiro, District, and Regional Authorities, supported by EKOenergy, focuses on enhancing water access and sustainability in the villages of Naberera and Emboreet, Simanjiro district (Manyara Region). Through the installation of two solar pumping systems, we aim to not only secure a clean and safe water supply but also promote the use of clean energy sources.

Before the intervention

Prior to our intervention, the village of Naberera relied on a water system powered by a diesel generator and power from the national grid, leading to high operational costs.

In Emboreet village, an electricity-dependent water system faced interruptions due to unreliable power supply, impacting the community’s access to water.

Project achievements

Oikos successfully installed two solar powered pumping systems in Naberera and Emboreet villages. In Naberera, the new solar system generates up to 13 kW of electricity; the system, paired with an 11 kW pump controller enhanced the existing water system.

In Emboreet, an 8.3 kW solar system and a 5.5 kW pump controller now provide reliable and sustainable energy for the water pumping station.

Both systems primarily rely on solar power, with the electric grid serving as a backup. The water pumping station at Naberera now produces approximately 215 m³/day, while Emboreet produces around 93 m³/day. These volumes cover the need of the people living in these two remote villages.

Impact on communities

This transformative project directly benefits 12,723 inhabitants in the two villages—7,481 in Naberera and 5,242 in Emboreet. The main impacts include:

  • Reliable Water Supply: Ensuring a year-round supply of safe water, utilising solar energy as the primary source, supported by the electric grid as a backup system.
  • Improved Sanitary Conditions: Regular water supply contributes to enhanced hygiene, positively impacting the overall health of the community.
  • Educational and Healthcare Benefits: Schools in target villages and health centres now enjoy a consistent supply of clean water, vital for maintaining hygiene practices. This directly benefits over 1,219 students in Naberera Primary School, 630 in Naberera Secondary School, and 670 in Emboreet Primary School, as well as approximately 180 patients per month in Emboreet and 450 per month in Naberera primary health centres.

Economic Impact

The installation of solar systems has allowed to reduce the sale price of water from 50 TZS to 30 TZS per 20-liter bucket, making water more affordable for the communities we serve.

By championing sustainable water solutions, we are not only safeguarding precious resources but also empowering communities for a resilient and green future.
