Maasai Women Art

The project Maasai Women Art, funded by Charity and Defence of Nature Trust and promoted by Istituto Oikos in partnership with Oikos East Africa, European Design Institute, Tazama Trust, and Sanjan ltd, improved the living conditions of 120 Maasai women of Mkuru, in Tanzania, supporting them in the establishment of a cooperative that produces traditional handmade beads.

In collaboration with IED and Francesca Torri Soldini, MWA launches a new collection every year, combining Maasai traditions and Western taste. Thanks to a stable income, women were able to leave an illegal and damaging activity for human and environmental health – cutting trees to sell charcoal – and ensure better wellbeing for their families.

MWA is now an independent women company that produces and exports traditional handmade beads in many countries.
It is possible to buy the MWA jewels on the website www.maasaiwomenart.org
